Stay Healthy & Increase Energy for Surfing

Staying healthy and keeping active is more of a chore as we get older. It gets a little harder, not to mention more expensive, to get all the vitamins and nutrients our bodies require. As we get older or should I say "As we get more mature", we start to put more energy into our ever increasing responsibilities, like jobs, kids, pets, taking care of our elderly parents, etc., that we tend to forget about our own health and well being. Women, especially, are busy taking care of everybody else.
When I was in my 20's I was extremely active and didn't put much thought into my diet. Having youth on my side, I was able to eat poorly and still have enough energy to stay active. Then in my 30’s, to maintain by present activity level and take on more responsibilities, I had to start watching what I was eating. I began to taking vitamins; I increased my protein intake and decreased eating carbohydrates.
When I turned 40 I noticed big changes in my body. It first began with my perfect eye sight, not being perfect anymore. I couldn’t read the fine print in dimly lit restaurants. I was doing the trombone thing every time I picked up something to read. For the first time in my life I went to see an eye doctor. She prescribed reading glasses and to start taking Lutein to keep my eyes healthy. And then my OBGYN told me to start taking calcium supplements. And after having a physically demanding day, I noticed I was sorer the next day and injuries were taking longer to heal. I definitely noticed more body aches and stiffness than I’ve ever felt before.
As I moved into my mid-forties, my energy level began to decline. I began to really pay close attention to my diet to make sure I was eating enough healthy, energy foods. I read up more on healthy things my body could use as it aged. I began to add flax seed and wheat germ into my morning smoothies. I calculated the percentages of vitamins and minerals that were in my daily vitamins and protein powder, to make sure I was getting what was required. I paid more attention to the foods I was eating so as not to gain any more weight or body fat. I noticed the number of vitamin pills and supplements were increasing in numbers.
So here I am now taking a handful of daily vitamins, calcium, Lutein and Glucosamine Chondroitin (helps with joint soreness and stiffness) supplements each morning. It’s a chore. I must also mention the expense of these vitamins and supplements. It really adds up each month. Besides that I’ve always had trouble swallowing pills as a kid and I still do as an adult. I could never take vitamins with plain water. I needed some type of fruit juice or smoothie to down the pills without gagging.
