First, there are some questions you need to ask yourself. How serious do you want to get with surfing? What is it that you want to do? Are you planning on surfing just a few times a year? Do you plan on being a longboarder a shortboarder? Will you be a weekend warrior or someone who surfs a lot and you plan on competing?
Beginner Surfers
If you are a beginner, I would first suggest checking out some of the surf camps in your area. Click here for a list of surf camps.
There are soft top surfboards that are less dangerous and less expensive for beginners and kids. Many surf schools use these types of surfboards for learning. Consider learning on a Longboard, as they are easier to paddle and stand up on. Depending on your weight and size, a longboard should range from 76 to 90 in length. Young girls can use even a shorter board. Your local surf shop is a wealth of information about boards.
Longboards verses shortboards
As mentioned above, longboards are easier to paddle and stand up on. However, they do not turn as easily or as quickly in the waves as a short board.
Shortboards on the other hand are fast, maneuverable and easier to get through the waves. However, they are more challenging to learn on. Shortboards are usually shorter than 70 in length.
Surf shapers have also make a board, what is sometimes called a funboard or a mini Longboard. These boards have a wide nose and reasonably thick rails. They are usually between 72 and 85. These boards are fairly easy to balance and float, and they are not as intimidating paddling out through the surf as a 9 foot board.

Surfboard Materials
Surfboards are basically made up of 2 types of materials - Fiberglass or epoxy. Ive used both and feel epoxy is a better board, because it is stronger and lighter weight. I hardly ever ding my epoxy board like I do with a fiberglass board. And if your favorite surf break is a 15 minute walk to the beach, its nice to have a lighter board to carry. The down side with epoxy is they are usually more expensive than fiberglass boards.
Good luck in finding your perfect surfboard. Email us if you should have any questions.
