What to wear

If you’re lucky enough to live near warm water, then a good swimsuit that doesn’t fall off is definitely recommended. Stay away from swimsuits that have beads or hard decoration on the top and bottoms. These will definitely irritate you as you are lying on your surfboard. Boardshorts are nice to wear over your suit bottoms. They'll help prevent exposing a cheek. Also, a rash guard is another useful surfwear piece for rash and sun protection.

If you are surfing cold water, then you’ll need to wear a wetsuit. Now days, wetsuits are made out of a very stretchy neoprene that is warm and easy to get off and on. I recommend investing in a good quality wetsuit. Be sure to rinse your wetsuit out after surfing and don’t leave it in the sun. This will prolong the life of your wetsuit. Your local surf shop can recommend how warm of a wetsuit you’ll need for your area.

Surf leash

Once upon a time, boards had no leashes. If you lost your board, you swam to shore. Surfboard leashes help you from loosing your board. However, they can also be dangerous and act like a bungee cord and snap your board back at you. People have been hit in the face this way. You should be a good swimmer if you surf. It is possible to still loose your board if your leash breaks. Ask your local surf shop what size leash you’ll need for your surfboard.

Surfboard Wax

There are different types of surfboard wax on the market. They are usually made for the different ocean temperatures. For example, if you surf California, you’ll usually be using a cool to cold water wax. In Hawaii they use a warm water wax. If the deck of your board has some form of traction pad, you might not need any wax.

Sunblock

Always wear sunblock. Make sure you use sunblock that is water resistant or water proof. Most surf shops stock these types of sunblocks. It is recommended to use sunblocks that have titanium oxide or zinc oxide in the ingredients. While most suggest an SPF of 15 for everyday use, the activity, time of day, time of year, and the duration should all be considered.
